MONTS DE LA LUNE AND RIVIÈRE BLEUE
Sites north of Dolisie, including the Monts de la Lune with its conical peaks and the Rivière Bleue with its greenish hue
North of Dolisie, on the road to Mossendjo, in the Tsoulou wildlife reserve, there are two sites well worth a visit: the Monts de la Lune (Mounts of the Moon) and the Rivière Bleue (Blue River). To get there, take the RN3; the track is very good, but can deteriorate in the rainy season. After the village of Mila Mila (2 hours' drive), continue straight on for the Monts de la Lune, then take the track on the right for the Rivière Bleue. About 20 km further on, as you pass a hill, turn left onto a small track, continuing for 10 km to reach the river.
The Monts de la Lune, or Kiloundou Mountains, are located near the loop of the Niari, in a vast, flat expanse of spectacular conical peaks - an impressive landscape, especially after crossing the dense Mayombe forest. This succession of hills, no more than 500 metres above sea level, offers an undulating, verdant landscape, plunging visitors into a surreal world. Native populations have given them the nickname "Mamelles d'Eve", referring to the breasts of the women.
The Rivière Bleue is renowned for the colour of its lake, which can turn from blue to green. It is located around 90 kilometres from Dolisie, near the Kouilou-Niari river. It's a superb place to stop off, picnic, swim in the crystal-clear water or take a pirogue ride. The more adventurous can camp here and enjoy a night in a remarkable natural setting.
