Paint Pots are deposits of ochre, a reddish-orange earth used as a dye by the Stoney and Blackfoot tribes.

These "paint cans", located near the north end of Highway 93, are actually deposits of ochre, an orange-red earth used by the Stoney and Blackfoot tribes as a dye for skin and clothing. Indeed, the natives were the first to discover the ochre that forms naturally in the rivers of the Vermilion Plain. Panels provide historical and scientific explanations along a short 20-minute trail that also leads to several mineral springs (3 small springs with ferruginous waters).
