ROYAL BC MUSEUM
Discover the Aboriginal culture and history of the province in Victoria.
You get a little lost in all of its galleries, but what a pleasure to discover the Aboriginal culture and history of the province so elegantly and intelligently presented! The extensive collection is divided into three main galleries.
First Nations Gallery. Sound documents, interactive slideshows, videos, photos, sculptures and vestiges testify to the disappeared civilizations. The Totem Hall is impressive, bristling with a multitude of monumental totem poles made by the Kwakwaka'wakw, heiltsuk, nuxalk, gitxsan, haida and nuu-chah-nulth nations. We will also enter Jonathan Hunt House, the ceremonial home of a Kwakwaka'wakw chief, before admiring the collection of Haida masks and clay sculptures
Gallery of modern history. Here, the history of the last 200 years of the province of British Columbia is discussed. Century Hall features a large number of period objects and replicas. Then, over a whole floor, the city of Victoria from the 1870s to 1920s (Old Town) is completely reconstructed life-size, with cobblestone streets, houses, shops and hotels that are more lifelike, giving us the impression of wandering through a town from the beginning of the last century.
Natural history gallery. Don't miss the impressive woolly mammoth on the second floor, a truer-than-life replica that will delight children! The gallery ranges from prehistory and its fossils to the themes of climate change
Other attractions. The park also administers some of the sites within Thunderbird Park. In addition to the permanent exhibits on natural and human history, there is a high-quality temporary exhibit that changes regularly. Also note that the museum houses the largest screen in British Columbia, the Imax 18.59 m x 25.9 m, for a unique visual experience at the end of your visit. You will be able to see a 4K movie on this screen, which is the result of the latest technology, offering much more than just a movie show! The shop is just as magnificent with beautiful objects to please you. However, prices are a little high.
A must-see museum in Victoria for an educational moment with the family. Children are welcome and can enjoy the fun activities. You should arrive in the morning not too late so that you have enough time to visit this incredible museum.
