Haida Heritage Center with many points of interest offering free tours of the island of Haida Gwaii.
There are two options for getting to the island of Haida Gwaii, by air or by sea. Air Canada operates a daily flight from Vancouver to Sandspit. BC Ferries operates from Prince Rupert to Skidegate year-round. There are many points of interest in the Haida Heritage Centre. Located in Kay Llnagaay, known as Sea-Lion Town, this ancient Haida community village brings together the cultures and traditions of the Haida people, who are in harmony with nature and known for their totem poles. Free tours are offered by Haida members.
Haida Gwaii Museum. Opening on six unique totem poles, this museum is not only a gathering place, but also the home of the Bill Reid Teaching Centre, Bill Reid being an internationally renowned Haida Gwaii artist. The museum features the world's largest collection ofargillite and wood carvings, early pioneer artifacts, jewelry, lithographs and local history.
Carving House. Carving house showing the various objects of the people's daily life, from the canoe as the main means of transportation to the pole totems, an Aboriginal tradition to mark the identity of a community, a family, but also to welcome or celebrate an important event.
Canoe House. An interpretive center on the history, lifestyle and transportation of the Haida community as it traded with the mainland in the 1800s.
