BILL REID GALLERY
A gallery that traces the history of Bill Reid and displays works of Native American art from the northwest coast of the Americas.
Bill Reid is a Native American artist from the Haida Nation, born in 1920 and died in 1998. His sculptures in particular are known across much of Canada, but you will also see jewelry, totems and sketches. As an extension of your visit to the Vancouver Art Gallery, this small gallery located downtown presents many works of Aboriginal art from the northwest coast of the American continent. A must-see in a beautiful setting, inside and out, to understand the importance of art in Native American culture. Some video installations retrace Bill Reid's history, since his childhood. Explanatory panels in front of each piece allow you to know the history and the context of creation of each one. You will discover a large mural dedicated to the Inuit culture, but also exhibits on indigenous textiles, art and the tradition of tattooing (scarification rituals). On two floors, the charm also works outside with its greenery, its gardens in which you can wander, and the magnificent facade of the gallery. At the end of your visit, take a look at the store which offers nice products, notably beautiful jewelry for women and books about Bill Reid's life or more generally about Native art. Beware, the entrance to the gallery can be difficult to find if you don't have the exact address. It is not immediately visible from the sidewalk.
