St. Boniface Cathedral is the oldest basilica in Western Canada.
The oldest church in Western Canada was built in 1818, but only the façade remains from that time, the cathedral having been destroyed several times by fire. In fact, two churches and four cathedrals have succeeded one another on this site, the latter being highly symbolic of the francophone presence in the West. The nave was rebuilt in 1970 inside the ruins, a realization of the architect Etienne Gaboury.
