OLD SYNAGOGUE
Former synagogue registered as a Historic Monument, with a fountain, a school and a meeting place on the first floor
The Jewish community of Pfaffenhoffen began settling in the area in the first half of the 14th century. However, the Counts of Hanau Lichtenberg did not permit mosaic worship in the village until 1683. This beautiful building, unfortunately abandoned but listed as a Historic Monument, was inaugurated in 1791. It housed a place of worship, a community center, a school, accommodation, an unleavened bread oven and ritual baths. Yet it was impossible to tell it apart from the Hebrew letters on the key of the door lintel. On the first floor, you can admire the stone fountain, the school and meeting place, the Schlafstaedt (lodging room for the poor passing through) and the kitchen. Climb the stairs and you'll see the separation of men and women. In the eastern wall is a magnificent holy arch housing the Torah scrolls. Above it, an oculus lined with multicolored glass signaled the end of Shabbat, when the colors were no longer distinguishable as the sun set and the light diminished.
