POINT AU PÈRE MARITIME HISTORIC SITE
Historic site housing the Onondaga submarine and a museum featuring an exhibit on the ship Empresse of Ireland.
Since 2009, the Onondaga submarine, formerly owned by the Canadian Navy, has been moored here. Come and discover the daily lives of some sixty men who lived confined for months in this submarine. Audioguided tour, possibility of a night-time experience on site (Night on Board experience including activities). There's also a new outdoor tour of the submarine, Les super pouvoirs de l'Onondaga, featuring informative video terminals. Next door, the museum features a permanent exhibition on the Empress of Ireland, which was shipwrecked near the coast following a collision with a collier. The tragedy took place on the night of May 29, 1914, and claimed the lives of over 1,000 passengers. It was one of the greatest maritime tragedies of peacetime. The exhibition features four immersive zones (the wreck, the memory of the passengers, the shipwreck, the ship) with over 200 objects, photos, videos and testimonials from survivors and their descendants, as well as interactive modules. All this is supported by a multisensory projection of the ship's last voyage (online viewing only, 20 minutes long). And let's not forget that we're also on the site of the Pointe-au-Père Lighthouse National Historic Site, the second highest lighthouse in Canada. Also on site: souvenir store, light refreshments and children's play area.
