MATANE WILDLIFE RESERVE
A popular reserve for hunting, fishing and outdoor enthusiasts, home to white-tailed deer, black bear, birds and small mammals.
Created in 1962, Réserve faunique de Matane is a 1,275 km² territory renowned for its exceptional wealth of wildlife. The grandiose landscapes encompass mountains, deep valleys and majestic waterways. It is home to the largest concentration of moose in Quebec, and a variety of guided hikes are available to learn more about this cervid. Réserve faunique de Matane remains a benchmark for hunting, fishing and outdoor enthusiasts.
There are two reception posts: John (40 km southeast of Matane on Route 195) and Étang-à-la-Truite (within the reserve). Traffic is prohibited from Labor Day to early November due to hunting quotas. Check the website for the opening hours of the two reception posts.
Wildlife: moose, white-tailed deer, black bear, fox, coyote, many small mammals and a multitude of bird species, including golden eagle, pileated woodpecker and bald eagle.
Lodging: camping (serviced and rustic sites), rustic camp, chalets, Chalets Horizon, Chic-Chocs mountain inn.
Activities: moose, black bear and small game hunting, wildlife observation, fishing (day and overnight), water sports, canyoning, hiking, biking, backcountry skiing, snowshoeing. Equipment rentals (watercraft, fishing gear, etc.) and sale of hunting and fishing licenses at the reception desk or Matane administrative office.
