HOWEVER
There is one employee who will make your life miserable. Here was my experience.
He came into the room at 00:45 and made a bunch of noise. In and out of his locker, not even trying to be quiet. Dragging stuff around, etc. Didn't matter to me, it's a hostel, plus I was watching TV very quietly. After his five or so minutes of banging around, he asked me to turn the volume down. I literally clicked the volume down then up, and asked if it was okay and he said yes. Ha! The street noise was more than my movie, for reference.
What he did next was even more upsetting. He proceeded to wake up an older gentleman, and ask him to turn off his nightlight... the extremely dim nightlight that i'm sure the hostel choose so that they could be left on and not bother people, yet safely go to the bathroom in the middle of the night.
The crazy part is I saw in his pile of stuf f both earplugs and a sleep mask. He was also bottom bunk, so could have made a sheet curtain like I had done with my comforter.
Why did he do these things? Solely as a power grab I believe. He also told me he liked to sleep in until 9, breakfast starts at 8 and is when my alarm went off. Right on!
He did change rooms, but continued to enter ours to retrieve items from his locker and the closet. Often neglecting to close the door on his way out.
He's a bully, I have spoken to others here who have had the same experience. The other staff are all wonderful, helpful people.
Hopefully he moves on, when he does the owners can contact me and I'll change my review.
The downstair area is cozy. You can hang out, eat, have a beer. It's a welcoming environment.
Je reviendrai et vous recommande cette marque établissement
Merci l'équipe ✌️
I was a solo traveller and it was easy to connect with other people in the common area.
The location is perfect: You can walk everywhere. Very close to many bars and restaurants in the area of Plateau. You can also walk to downtown and old Montréal or take the metro which is a 5 min walk away.
I would definitely stay here again next time.
1. They made it mandatory to cover the bed with sheet, otherwise punishment of 50 dollars per day. They didn't tell me when I checked in, so I didn't know the rule existed at all. I thought it was optional like other hostels.
2. Kitchen locked after 9pm, if you just want to access the fridge and take a drink, no way. No breakfast until 8am.
3. Two back doors are opened by staff from time to time(open for at least 2 minutes on average), cold air directly goes in, a bit cold sitting in the lounge.
4. No matter how careful you are, walking on the wooden floor always makes noise.
5. For the gentleman who prepares breakfast for guests, could you whistle less often and not too loud? You are very friendly and willing to help, I saw that. Sometimes your whistling is a bit high-pitched.
6. Wi-fi not impressive, about 11 Mbps and many people use it simultaneously.
7. This is not the fault of this hostel, my room was 207 with 8 beds, at least 2 people did not take a shower for at least 1 day(very likely did not change clothes as well), the smell was amazing and unforgettable. Imagine sleeping in the same room with those people. They already paid for it but decided not to use the shower(there are plenty of rooms for shower) to keep themselves clean? I never know.
I only booked for 3 nights, so not the worst.
Le seul défaut : les lits font beaucoup de bruits alors on bouge le moins possible.
The private rooms are great value for the money. The dormitories are also incredible value, however it’s important to note that if you stay in a dorm, there is nowhere public to work or take a phone call after 11pm. This is not an issue with a private room as even the most basic ones have a desk.
The breakfast is INCREDIBLE value. Really, not sure how they are able to provide this for $40 a night dorm bookings, unbelievably generous.
Note that while this is a certified “auberge de jeunesse” there are a lot of seniors and families with small children, so it might not have the youth hostel vibe you are expecting. I would stay here again, especially in a private room. They are NICE.
