One of the most visited sites in Montreal, on the northwestern flank of Mount Royal, with a magnificent view from its terrace.

Rising on the northwest flank of Mount Royal, this is one of Montreal's most visited sites, in part for the magnificent view it offers from its terrace. A place of meditation, this impressive neo-Renaissance basilica, topped by a gigantic octagonal copper dome, welcomes pilgrims from all over the world to pay their respects to Saint Joseph. Not to be missed: Sunday organ concerts, a tradition for over 50 years. On-site services: stores, restaurants and accommodation.

A vast redevelopment project is currently underway (completion scheduled for 2024): new reception and service pavilion with green roof, development of a large outdoor multifunctional pedestrian plaza, reconfiguration of the monumental garden, new monumental structure for the only carillon in Quebec and addition of 5 bells to the current 56, complete redevelopment of the museum, development of an observation center at the basilica's lantern level, etc.

Did you know? The Basilica stands 283 metres above sea level, making it the highest point in Montreal. From Queen Mary Road to the basilica's portico, there are 283 steps to climb, including 99 wooden prayer steps for pilgrims wishing to kneel. Brother André's heart, on public display, was stolen on the night of March 15-16, 1973 and recovered almost two years later.

Beautiful monument, impressive architecture is pretty, and the view from the summit is superb. Some visitors climb the steps of the stairs to knees...
To see for the breathtaking view from the terraces and rich and varied interior. The view from the pilgrims full of enthusiasm who climb the steps with one of the knees is also very impressive.
One of the most catholic fine buildings of the province. The legend its loyal climbs grand stairs to knees... :)
