POINTE-À-CALLIÈRE ARCHAEOLOGY AND HISTORY COMPLEX
Museum that showcases important architectural remains and a unique collection of objects and artifacts in Montreal.
On the very site of the founding of Montreal, this museum showcases important architectural remains and a unique collection of objects and artifacts. The site was the subject of numerous excavations in the 1980s, leading to the discovery of 1,000 years of human activity and the founding of the museum in 1992, during Montreal's 350th anniversary celebrations. It was classified as a national historic and archaeological site in Canada in 1998 and, the following year, in Quebec. The museum complex is composed of various buildings: the Éperon (reception pavilion with ticket office and checkroom), the archaeological crypt, the Ancienne-Douane, the Maison des Marins, the Youville Pumping Station and, since 2017, Fort Ville-Marie and the first collector sewer. Don't miss the multimedia show "Générations MTL" which will take you on a journey through the great moments in the history of Montreal and its development (performance every 30 minutes). The museum also houses some of the most interesting temporary exhibitions and has in the past hosted exhibitions on the origins, secrets and heritage of the Inca Empire, the traditions and trends of French dining, the queens of ancient Egypt, the cult TV series La Petite Vie, the shamanism and mythology of traditional Amazonian societies, etc. If there is only one museum to visit to discover the history of the city, it is Pointe-à-Callière. A must-see!
