Practical information : Going out Québec
Timetable
There are not really any nightclubs in Quebec City, some of which have closed in recent years. As for activities with friends (movies, billiards, bowling, go-karting, escape games, etc.), the hours vary greatly depending on the type of establishment. There are also a few casinos in Quebec, including the Charlevoix casino in La Malbaie (opening at 9 or 11 a.m., closing late). For the performing arts (music, comedy, theatre, etc.), the annual programming is concentrated outside the summer season, mostly in the evening.
Budget & Tips
La Vitrine offers special deals and discounted rates on pre-sales for all kinds of shows and events in Quebec (lavitrine.com). For movies, discounts are available for matinees and on the weekly discount day (usually Tuesday).
Remember that the prices listed are generally exclusive of taxes. Not only must taxes (14.975%) be added, but also the 15% service charge when applicable. All methods of payment are accepted, but it may happen that the bar in a theatre, for example, only accepts cash and/or debit cards.
To be booked
To ensure a seat, reservations are highly recommended for shows, and sometimes even required. For certain activities such as go-karting and escape games, reservations are often imperative and a deposit may be required. For all other activities, simply show up on the day.
Night transport
There is no night bus service in Quebec City, but on Fridays and Saturdays, there are about 15 lines that provide service for night owls (only a few trips are offered at night). Otherwise, there are always taxis, Eva and Uber that offer 24-hour service. Also note that several cities - and even villages - have drive-through services available year-round, such as Tolerance Zero Quebec in the capital (tzcapitale.com, annual subscription required).
Age restrictions
In Quebec, the legal drinking age is 18. Wherever a bar license applies, only adults are allowed to drink. Note that if you look under 25, you will probably be asked for official photo identification. You should also be aware that some clubs may require that you be 21 or 25 years of age to frequent them.
Smokers
Smoking is not permitted in clubs, theatres, casinos and their terraces. Ditto for billiard rooms, activity centres (go-karting, escape games...), etc. Smoking is also required 9 metres from the door of the facility, although some people do not respect this distance.
Tourist traps
Just as with sporting events, the resale of entertainment tickets is rampant online, and sometimes even on the street. While it's true that you can save a few bucks by buying from resellers, it would be a shame to waste your money on fake tickets. So go through the official ticket offices.
