FORTIFICATIONS OF QUEBEC HISTORIC SITE
Guided tours to discover the fortifications and to explore the old city of Quebec.
Québec City is the only city north of Mexico to have preserved its fortifications, which is why it was proclaimed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985. Stroll along the 4.6 km of fortifications and pass through the gates of the walls that protect the heart of the old city. Along the way, take in the Promenade des Gouverneurs, Parc Montmorency, Rue des Remparts, the Nouvelles Casernes, unique military structures and much more. There's also the Parc-de-l'Artillerie heritage site. In the 18th and 19th centuries, this was a site dedicated to the defense of Quebec City. That's why this former military barracks and warehouse is now part of the Fortifications of Quebec. It was, and still is, a major strategic location. In the late 19th century, the Canadian government chose this strategic location to build the country's first cartridge factory. Today, you can visit the Arsenal Foundry (1903), the Dauphine Redoubt (1712) and the Officers' Quarters (1818). Guided tours of both the fortifications and the Artillery Park are offered in season. Good deal: the Discovery Passport entitles you to a reduced rate on four activities. Several other activities are also offered, including "The Legend of the Talking Walls", a fun, interactive GPS-guided tour that's sure to please the whole family.
