SHRINE OF SAINTE-ANNE-DE-BEAUPRÉ
On the north shore of the St. Lawrence River, facing Île d'Orléans, this basilica, first built in the 17th century, is dedicated to the patron saint of Quebec. World-renowned, easily spotted from the road, it is the oldest place of pilgrimage in the province. It is a gigantic neo-Gothic building with two bell towers between which the golden statue of Saint Anne stands guard. Inside, the basilica consists of five huge naves separated by columns with sculpted capitals, and the barrel vault is covered with mosaics depicting the life of Saint Anne, a masterpiece by the French mosaicist Auguste Labouret. About 200 predominantly blue stained-glass windows illuminate it. In the left wing of the transept, the statue of the saint holding Mary in her arms attracts the faithful, who gather before her. The relics of Saint Anne are housed in the chapel just behind. Numerous testimonies of miraculous happenings adorn the columns of the naves. Crutches and prostheses, children's shoes and photos are intertwined. This place of meditation, respected by all Quebecers, is very busy in the summer, especially during the novena to Saint Anne in July. Guided tours of the Basilica and special activities are also available for groups (reservation at the secretariat). For a souvenir of your visit to the Sanctuary, his shop sells a whole range of religious objects.
