WESTERN POINT
Pointe-de-l'Ouest is located one kilometer south of Baie-Sainte-Claire. The island's first lighthouse was built here in 1858 (although the new structure dates from 1967), and its light can be seen for 50 km around. Despite a series of lighthouses built in the 19th century, shipwrecks continued to be a frequent occurrence. Since the 18th century, 200 ships are said to have sunk in the island's vicinity. Near the coast, you can see the wreck of the trawler Le Calou, which ran aground in 1982. You'll also find a small inn just a few steps away.
