Economic empire based on fishing along the coasts of Newfoundland and Labrador by James Ryan, a lieutenant in Bonavista.
James Ryan purchased the property in 1869 to build the headquarters of James Ryan Ltd. He and his brothers created an economic empire in Bonavista based on the Newfoundland and Labrador coastline fishery. This complex of traditional 19th century wooden buildings sits on the edge of Bonavista's historic harbour. Its multimedia exhibit Cod, Seals and Survivors offers a 500-year history of the East Coast fishery.
