HARBOUR AND OLD TOWN
An amphitheatrical old town with distinctive streets and brightly-colored, mansard-roofed houses.
The city is built amphitheatrically around a deep harbor, 1.6 km long and 800 m wide, which communicates with the Atlantic via a narrow channel known as the Narrows. This 200-metre-wide channel is hemmed in by 150-metre-high escarpments, which are home to the pretty Battery district. At the edge of the harbour, Harbour Drive runs alongside the docks where ships of all nationalities are anchored. Behind the harbour, on the steep slopes, the streets of the old town are lined with charming houses known as "Jellybean Row".
