A site housing a battery, the largest in Normandy, discovered by Gary Sterne, the landowner.

An astonishing site, around which controversy has been rife. In 2006, Gary Sterne, the English owner of the land, claimed to have discovered "one of the most important German batteries in Normandy". Historians denounced this as a "sensational pseudo-discovery". In any case, this German battery, which seems to have been forgotten for almost 60 years, was part of the Atlantic Wall.

I visited Normandy 6 weeks prior to this trip (August) and was told that Maisey Battery was a waste of time as it was just one cannon and nothing else to see.

This time round, I decided to visit anyway and decide for myself. I can quite confidently say that this place is a must visit and should definitely be on the top of your list when visiting Normandy for WWII sites.

The premises was uncovered by British Historian Gary Sterne (Google It) - and it shows what the defence location would have been like during D-Day. A map was handed out to us in English that explained on the finds and routes too!

Hopefully they have a museum built so that the findings can be displayed in a nicer format (rather than the hut) - but I understand there are some political barriers in the way at this stage.

A must visit.

Fascinating visit to a site literally buried, both physically and documents by the allies after the Americans failed to find and neutralise on D day. Found by the owner who bought pieces of land from lots of different farmers and excavated it all. Incredibly researched and documented and presented.

Sehr schade.
