FORT HENRY
A former British defensive unit, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The military ceremony is to be seen!
Fort Henry, built between 1832 and 1837, was the largest single British defensive unit west of Quebec City. It was intended to protect Upper Canada from invasion by the United States, then an annoying neighbor when we recall the famous Anglo-American War of 1812. Today, the site is one of Canada's finest historical attractions, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As soon as you pass through the wooden gates of the fortifications, guides in period costume welcome you and tell you about life at the fort in the 19th century (guided tours in French offered four times a day). Firing exercises are particularly colorful. The fort also takes part in a number of very interesting special events, including parades, demonstrations on the life of women (soldiers' wives) at the fort, the life of schoolchildren and the place of music in the regiment. So if you'd like to take advantage of other activities during your visit, find out in advance so that your visit coincides with these. Exceptional opening in October for Halloween (Fort Fright), a thrilling family experience. Haunted tours are also organized in season by The Haunted Walk of Kingston (hauntedwalk.com/kingston-tours). Several dining options are available on site (bistro terrace, canteen, bakery, BeaverTails), and a number of boutiques allow you to take home souvenirs or handicrafts.
