Designated a monument of historic interest in 1978 by the National Capital Commission and the Corporation of the City, Ottawa Cathedral, with its two silver steeples surrounding a life-size statue of the Virgin Mary, was built between 1841 and 1858, and restored in the late 1990s. It is the city's oldest church (still in use). Masses are held in English, French and even bilingual. Guided tours are available for a fee.
