ART GALLERY OF ONTARIO (AGO)
A superb art museum featuring, among other things, many Canadian works. Mention to the building made by Frank Gehry.
Here's one of Toronto's must-see cultural tours. The AGO is a modern, dynamic art center that has carved out a fine reputation for itself in the North American art world. Its bold architecture - the work of architect Frank Gehry - is worth a visit in itself. The story of the museum's construction, based on the former home of The Grange donated by Harriet Dixon, is fascinating. Free tours given by volunteers are organized on a regular basis and provide a wealth of information about the museum. For an architectural and gourmet break, the huge glass gallery on the second floor is a great option. The permanent exhibits feature many Canadian works, including those of the Group of Seven (7 painters, founders of Canadian painting, highlighting Canada's wild landscapes). Their canvases, with their bright colors and simple forms, are widely represented (their first exhibition was held here in 1920). Frederick Varley, A.Y. Jackson, Lawren Harris, Frank Johnston, Arthur Lismer, J.E.H. Mac Donald, Franklin Carmichael: all the greats are present. The AGO is also particularly well thought-out for children. Fun tours are often organized, and are also available in French. On-site services: art and souvenir store, bistro (weekend brunch until 5:30 p.m.), espresso bar in the Galleria Italia.
