ART GALLERY OF ONTARIO (AGO)
A superb art museum featuring, among other things, many Canadian works. Mention to the building made by Frank Gehry.
This is one of Toronto's must-see cultural tours. The AGO is a modern and dynamic art center that has managed to build a strong reputation in the North American art world. Its bold architecture - the work of architect Frank Gehry - is worth a visit in itself. The story of how the museum came to be built from the former home of Harriet Dixon, The Grange, is fascinating. Free tours given by volunteers are regularly organized and will allow you to discover a lot of details about the museum. For an architectural and culinary break, the huge glass gallery on the second floor is a great option. The permanent exhibitions include many Canadian works, including those of the Group of Seven. Their brightly colored and simple paintings are widely represented. Frederick Varley, A.Y. Jackson, Lawren Harris, Frank Johnston, Arthur Lismer, J.E.H. Mac Donald, Franklin Carmichael: all the greatest are present. Don't miss the temporary exhibitions either, which are generally of excellent quality. The AGO is also particularly well thought out for children. Fun tours are often organized and also available in French. Good deal: free admission on Wednesdays from 6 pm and at all times for those 25 and under. On-site services: art and souvenir store, bistro (brunch on weekends until 5:30 pm), espresso bar in the Galleria Italia.
