WHITE BEAR FOREST
The country of giant pines of 1 meter in diameter and which are sometimes 40 meters high in Temagami.
This land of bays is also the land of giant pines, 1 metre in diameter and sometimes 40 metres high. Some have reached the venerable age of 350. So they witnessed exploration, trading, shipbuilding and log driving. The oldest could have seen the explorer Pierre de Troyes pass by in 1686! The White Bear Old Growth Forest, accessible from the Municipality of Temagami, has approximately 30 kilometres of hiking trails. For a first visit, we recommend the White Bear Trail which starts near the Temagami Fire Tower. These trails of all levels traced by an Anishinabe tribe would have been part of a portage system used 3,000 years ago. The territory has been crossed many times, but remains virtually unchanged, except for a small dam and the deserted site of a sawmill. The pine trees can be admired from the air. This will kill two birds with one stone: not only will you see the white pines in the sky, but you will experience the seaplane! One airline suggests flights over the lakes and forests of the region, Lakeland Airways.
Access. There are several accesses for walking trails. On the website, you will find maps showing the different accesses, the trails with their total length and the places to pitch your tent. If you are driving, you can park at Caribou Mountain Ski Hill and access the trails directly from there
