FORT WILLIAM HISTORICAL PARK
The fort that was the headquarters of the North West Company and the center of the North American fur trade in Thunder Bay.
In the mid-19th century, Fort William was the headquarters of the North West Company and the fur trade center of North America. Adventurers, traffickers and travelers stopped here. Today, this historic re-enactment site explores the evolution of the North West Company and the fur trade in Canada through more than 40 reconstructed historic structures, an Aboriginal camp and a farm. The site features over 8,000 European and First Nations replicas and artifacts dating primarily from 1803 to 1821. Interpreters and artisans in period costume offer daily tours and demonstrations, and special programs are presented every weekend. Also available on site are educational programs, nightly programs, craftsman workshops, the David Thompson Astronomical Observatory, canoe and kayak rentals, serviced and unserviced camping (mid-May to mid-October), and a variety of activities throughout the season. For the hungry, a canteen serves meals on the go during the summer months (open daily); other catering options for groups. Please note that the guided tour of the historic site is offered only on weekdays by reservation from mid-September to mid-May. For the hours of the different services and the rates of the other activities (astronomical observatory, watercraft rental, camping, etc.), visit the website.
