POINT PELEE NATIONAL PARK
It may be one of the smallest national parks in the country, but it's a giant of North American flora and fauna.
This region, which covers just 0.25% of Canada's land area, has the greatest diversity of trees, insects, amphibians, reptiles and birds in the country. Point Pelee's lands enjoy the warmest climate and longest frost-free period in the country. Although it is one of the smallest national parks in Canada, it is a giant of North American wildlife, recognized worldwide. In the spring and fall, the skies are covered with millions of migrating birds (Festival of the Feather in May). Any serious birder must make a pilgrimage here. And what about the monarch butterflies: they can be counted in the millions! When they pass through in the fall, fields of butterflies, literally orange, await you. The exceptional climate that affects this region explains its lush vegetation. Home to Canada's only Carolinian forest, it is home to flora that usually grows much further south. Mention should be made of the superb white sand beaches, perfect for lazing around and swimming.
