Before you set off, a little history
In 1926, the United States decided to build the first road linking East and West. The creation of this route fueled the escapist dreams of America's war-traumatized youth. With the boom in travel on the Mother Road, numerous diners, motels and other businesses sprang up and proliferated along the route.
Although it was used on many occasions to transport soldiers and supplies during the war, the road was abandoned after the creation of the Interstates in 1953. These freeways, based on the German model, linked East and West in barely thirty hours, far less than the minimum two-week journey.
By 1987, Route 66 was giving back to travelers its former enthusiasm. AnArizona barber, Angel Delgadillo, set up an association to defend the route and succeeded in having the entire state route classified as Historic Route 66. Following this, President Bill Clinton decided to classify the entire Route 66.

Wherever you start from, one thing's for sure: you'll see a lot of the country. Route 66 crosses no less than 8 states. Starting in Chicago, you'll pass through Illinois, Missouri, a tiny slice of Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico,Arizona and California, in that order.
When should you take a road-trip on Route 66?
It goes without saying that Route 66 offers a wide variety of landscapes. From the great plains to the desert, via the biggest cities, you'll see it all. Be careful, though, about the time of year you decide to go, as climates can vary greatly from one place to another.
- Winter : you'll have to deal with the snow and sub-zero temperatures ofIllinois as you approach Chicago. Avoid this season.
- Spring: as the center of the country is often tornado-prone, we don't recommend going there at this time.
- Summer : the road is very popular with tourists, but temperatures can rise quickly, especially in the south, as in Texas and New Mexico.
- Autumn : temperatures are very mild, especially between late August and early November. And with fewer tourists, it's the best time of year for a road trip.

How much time should I allow for my road trip?
Some guides and operators suggest that you cover Route 66 in a minimum of two weeks. If your timing is tight, you may choose this option, but bear in mind that your trip will be a sporting one.
We advise you to allow at least a month for your trip, as a road-trip on Route 66 is worth taking your time over. What's more, slow travel is part of a more sustainable approach to tourism.
