This institution is THE German restaurant of the Loop, known for its cuisine combining German and American recipes. The large counter inside the room dates back to the restaurant's opening in 1898. Joseph Berghoff made the Dortmund-Chicago trip in 1870 and very quickly devoted himself to beer production. What was once a small brewery is now a large, well-oiled machine. Schnitzel and other onion soups parade in a lively and popular atmosphere, where Berghoff Prairie Lager's pints clash.
