UNITY TEMPLE
Unity Temple classified as a world heritage site by UNESCO, again worth a visit for lovers of architecture
Frank Lloyd Wright's little-known masterpiece deserves far more attention than it is currently getting. The proof is in the pudding: as of July 2019, Unity Temple is one of eight Frank Lloyd Wright buildings to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site! A landmark in the transition from traditional to modern architecture, elected one of the ten most important buildings in the United States, Unity Temple is not as widely publicized as the Home and Studio, even though Wright himself described it as a turning point in contemporary architecture. Wright's focus was on interior space, which he saw as the very essence of a building. As a result, the temple's sober, uncluttered exterior contrasts with its magical beauty. Unfortunately, in recent years, the temple had lost some of its splendor, having received far too little maintenance. Indeed, it was very difficult to find the funds to be able to restore this much-needed edifice. Work began in July 2015, after the modest sum of $23 million had been raised, and was completed in the summer of 2017. Since its reopening, Unity Temple is once again worth a visit, for those interested in architecture. A superb work of form, line, space and light was designed by Wright in this symmetrical, bicameral ensemble. It's about time restoration work was carried out to preserve this architectural gem.
