FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT HOME AND STUDIO
Building as a laboratory with playroom, workshop, studio and large circular room with balconies
During his 70-year career as an architect, Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) built over 600 buildings. His house, which we visit in Oak Park, is the second building he designed and where he lived from the age of 22 to 40. It is therefore a kind of laboratory, a testament to his influences and future ideas. During the visit, especially in theplayroom, you will learn that four influences dominated his career: nature - he was born in a Wisconsin town and was always very close to nature -, Louis Sullivan - his first boss -, Japan - whose grace and purity of geometric forms he appreciated - and finally music - which he also considered as representative of a harmonious construction. The second part of the visit is his workshop and studio. One enters a large circular room, lined with raised balconies, where engineers and artists worked together. It was here that the "Prairie style" was developed, which characterizes many buildings, such as Robie House (in the south of Chicago, in Hyde Park). The tour is conducted with great care, by people who are passionate about architecture and Wright. One comes away intrigued and enriched. Note that of the 600 buildings Wright envisioned, 430 still exist and 90 are located in and around Chicago. As of 2018, eight of these buildings have been designated as UNESCO sites.
