THE MONADNOCK BUILDING
The highest building in the world, without the help of metal frames, with brick walls 1.80 m thick.
The north building, completed in 1891, was the tallest building in the world to stand without the use of metal reinforcement. To do this, it was necessary to build brick walls 1.80 m thick, which at the time was supposed to make the construction financially economical. But if you look at the facade more closely, you can see that each brick had to be shaped to fit the general shape of the building, which ultimately cost a fortune. The southern half of the building, completed in 1893, is one of the first examples of a skyscraper with a metal structure.
