EVANSTON HISTORY CENTER
City with a house that traces Evanston's history and has many humanitarian and social institutions
The Dawes House houses this museum. Charles Gates Dawes was Vice-President of the United States under Calvin Coolidge in 1924. His house traces Evanston's history, from the settlement of the Indians to the Methodists and the creation of Northwestern University. After having been a deeply conservative and religious city for a long time, Evanston made a turning point in the 1960s, when its industries closed. The city is reinventing itself and attracting a more mixed population as well as many humanitarian and social institutions.
