MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY (M.S.I.)
Interactive science museum with a giant model of the Loop with its streets, subways and skyscrapers.
The M.S.I. is one of the most visited museums in the United States. It is a gigantic one (a good half day's visit), with exhibitions on topics as diverse as aerospace, aviation, human body, genetics, environment, rail development, energy. On the first floor is the exhibition on trains, their evolution and their role in the modern world; There is a giant loop model on the Loop with its streets, its air subway, its skyscrapers: it would seem to fly over the city by helicopter. Miniature electric trains will take you through the U.S. Loop from the Chicago Loop to Seattle, the Midwest and the Rocky Mountains. The M.S.I. opened in 1933, in the imposing building created in 1893 for the Colombian Exhibition and called the Palace of Fine Arts at the time. At the end of the Colombian Exhibition and until 1921, the building was occupied by the Field Museum. In 1921, the Field Museum integrated its current location and the building remained empty for five years until Julius Rosenwald, then owner of Sears, Roebuck and Co, visited the Deutsches Museum in Munich. Returning to Chicago, he decided to create an interactive museum on the Deutsches Museum model designed to raise public awareness of science. The former Palace of Fine Arts then became the Museum of Science and Industry in 1933. Since 1995, the M has been one of Chicago's «landmarks».
