STONY ISLAND ARTS BANK
Renovated former bank with a space dedicated to art and culture with an emphasis on African American collections.
Built in 1923, this old obsolete bank was completely renovated by Chicago-based artist Theaster Gates, who bought the building from the city for a modest $1. Its goal: to revitalize Chicago's South Side by creating a space dedicated to art and culture, with a particular focus on African-American collections. Stony Island is at a crossroads between an art gallery, a library and a community centre. We love the big room with its book-covered walls up to the ceiling!
