Romanesque-style Fine Arts Building with artists' and musicians' studios, a bookstore and a theater.

The Fine Arts Building was built in 1885 by architect Solon Beman. Renovated in 1898 and renamed the Fine Arts Building, it retained its Romanesque architecture, but three floors were added and the interior was redesigned to house artists, architects and publishers. From then on, the FAB served as an exhibition space and a school of art and architecture. Today, it houses artists' and musicians' studios, a bookstore on the second floor and the excellent Café des Artistes. The Art Nouveau murals on the tenth floor date from the renovation of 1898 and were painted in reaction to the machine age of the late 1890s. It is also recommended that you take the elevator. A bellman is waiting for you there, and will take you to the upper floors in this elevator straight out of a period movie! If you are lucky enough to pass by on the second Friday of the month, don't hesitate to go to the artists' studios, open to all curious people.

The Studebaker Theatre, which can still be seen on the inscription, was built in 1917 on the ground floor and was used as a theatre for some time before it was used exclusively for foreign film screenings until the 1970s, when it had to close. Reopened in 1982, the theater became Chicago's center for art film and foreign films. Gradually, new film libraries such as the Gene Siskel Film Center opened in Chicago, resulting in the permanent closure of the center in 2000.
