FLAT IRON BUILDING
Triangular building in the shape of an iron is quite representative of the arty and alternative atmosphere of Wicker Park
The Flat Iron Building is a triangular building in the shape of an iron. It was built in 1913 on the corner of Milwaukee and North Avenue. It is the centerpiece of the Wicker Park neighborhood, and one of its symbols. The first and second floors are a veritable labyrinth of white walls and wooden floors, where twenty-five local artists have been exhibiting for over twenty years. Between painters, sculptors, young artists and established artists making a living from their art, it's truly one big artistic family you'll be visiting. New artists exhibit on the walls of this labyrinth - they are each given 3 m of wall space, while established artists each have their own space, which they arrange as they wish. The space was created on the initiative of the "Around the Coyote" collective, founded by Parisian Jim Happy-Delpech in 1989. The idea was to unite the creative forces of local artists from the Bucktown and Wicker Park neighborhoods, and create an annual festival modelled on the bohemian art festivals of Paris. After several editions, the festival came to an end. Every first Friday of the month, the artists' studios are open to the public. A festive atmosphere reigns throughout the building on this open evening. Flat Iron epitomizes the arty, alternative atmosphere of Wicker Park, where art is an integral part of the way of life.
