YERKES OBSERVATORY
Romanesque observatory with a dome considered an important place in the development of modern astrophysics.
The Yerkes Observatory is part of the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Chicago. It was built in 1897 in the Romanesque style, and is considered an important site in the development of modern astrophysics. Note the elaborate decoration of the facades. The main dome, housing one of the world's largest telescopes, is the most distinctive feature of this beautiful building. In November 2018, the University of Chicago decided to close the observatory to the public and put it up for sale.
