Chapel dedicated to Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, protector of sailors, overlooking the Seine estuary and the Pont de Normandie bridge

On the heights of Honfleur, this chapel stands on the site of an ancient sanctuary, built in the 11th century by Richard II, Duke of Normandy, as an ex-voto after escaping a shipwreck. Destroyed in a cliff slide, it was rebuilt between 1600 and 1615, notably by sailors from Honfleur. Inside, models of boats and plaques bear witness to the passage of illustrious figures. Dedicated to Notre-Dame de Grâce, the patroness of Honfleur and its sailors, the chapel has seen the visit of Louis XIII, Bonaparte and Thérèse de Lisieux, among others, and remains a popular place to visit today. Outside, don’t miss the 23-bell carillon, built between 1992 and 1999 by Virginie Bassetti. To hear it ring, come at noon! On the other hand, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Seine estuary and the Pont de Normandie at any time.

If you’re feeling more sporty, there’s a great walk between the Côte de Grâce and Mont Joli! Located in the commune of Equemauville, these 2 sites are owned by the town of Honfleur. Start by taking the (steep!) côte de la Croix-Rouge, then turn right towards the Mont Joli ramp (approx. 5 km). The magnificent view over Honfleur and the Seine estuary will reward the brave. You’ll arrive at the Plateau de Grâce, a listed site with a chapel set in a haven of greenery and centuries-old trees.
