WALKER ART CENTER
Walker Art Center is a museum of modern art with a vast collection of works dating from 1940 to the present day
The Walker Art Center attracts art and architecture lovers. This museum of modern art has a vast collection of works that covers a period from 1940 to the present day. It includes works from all over the world such as those of Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Henry Moore, Roy Lichtenstein, Matthew Barney. The media are multiple: you will discover works in video format, music, painting and most are interactive. You will also be able to meet a dolphin who makes the connection between the two parts. The museum is composed of two buildings: the northern part is the work of Edward Larrabee Barnes, built in 1971, to which was added the extension of the Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron (also authors of the Tate Modern in London) in 2005, a work that is an extension of the first building. Thus, the bricks on the façade of the old building are found on the floor of the new one. You will notice that the walls and doors do not have right angles. It is a half-private, half-public museum. It is possible to walk around the part that does not contain exhibits and enjoy the videos and music or have a coffee. In 2017, the museum was at the heart of a controversy. The sculpture Scaffold, by Sam Durant, depicted a gallows and evoked the execution of 38 Dakota Indians in 1862. This scaffold shocked their descendants and the misunderstood artist agreed to have the work buried, by Dakota leaders, in a ceremony.
