CATHEDRAL OF SAINT PAUL
This European-inspired cathedral was built in the Renaissance style by the Frenchman Emmanuel Masqueray
At the beginning of the 20th century, Archbishop John Irland decided to build the cathedral on the highest point of the city. He even requested that the spire above the cathedral be higher than that of the Capitol, symbolizing the rivalry between Church and State; it was erected in 1915, nine years after the beginning of its construction. Built in a Renaissance style by Frenchman Emmanuel Masqueray, this European-inspired cathedral is reminiscent of Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome. The stained glass windows are made in a Tiffany style.
