JAMES J. HILL HOUSE
James J. Hill House, built in 1891, was considered the largest and most expensive house in Minnesota.
Built in 1891, this impressive house was considered the largest and most expensive in Minnesota. It is still today a remarkable symbol of the wealth and power of America's golden age. It's also known as the "Downtown Abbey of Minnesota", just to give you an idea! James Hill was made famous for its railroad, known as The Great Northern Railway, which linked the city of Saint Paul to Seattle in the late 19th century. Guided tours of the house are organized every thirty minutes from Wednesday to Sunday. They last about seventy-five minutes. During the visit, one is struck by the small "gadgets" that the house is equipped with. In particular, it has a security system that was revolutionary for its time. In the dining room, under the table was hidden a doorbell to discreetly call the maids. In 1961, the house was classified as a historical monument. The testimony of one of the maids who began her service with the Hill family at a very young age has helped to inform historians about the lifestyle and customs of the inhabitants of this house. Please note that the night visit, offered after 6pm, is less interesting than the general visit. The house includes a two-storey art gallery, which displays paintings, furniture and sculptures acquired by Hill. Namely that every Sunday it is possible to explore the house without taking part in a guided tour.
