LAKE SUPERIOR RAILROAD MUSEUM
In Duluth, under the large glass roof of a station hall, there are entreposées marvels, old locomotives («iron horses»), most of which are still in progress, some with the famous iron triangle in order to pave the way for animals and possible obstacles. In particular, we admire a huge black steam locomotive, 566 t 12 engine and piston, which was used to transport heavy iron ore shipments from the Mesabi mountain range (when this loco was running out of steam, it consumed 10 to 45 000 t of coal per hour and l of water!); behind the locomotive, its container, which contained 26 t of coal and 90 000 l of water, forcing the locomotive to stop every two hours to supply the steel monster; the "Soo Line" diesel locomotive, replacing the old steam locos and proudly displaying its unique lighthouse on the front of its orange and yellow cabin; gear clearance machines, with a huge flat base on the front which took the path by snow; or a snow milling of several metres in diameter mounted on the front of the train to blow the snow. A small village was reconstituted on the sides of the tracks, including a small souvenir kiosk that sells beautiful postcards of the exposed trains. If you have the chance to meet the owner of the places, ask him to tell you the story of these trains. Plan three or four hours of visit in this case…
