FRIDAY MOSQUE

(Masjed-e Djomeh). The oldest elements of this famous mosque date back to the first half of the th century. A notable characteristic, the inner courtyard, of abbasid style, is surrounded by arcades without iwan. Only four «primitive» mosques of this type are still available in Iran. See the remarkable mihrab decor of 940. Admire the beautiful minbar (chair for prayer) of the th century carved wood. Let us also remember the decoration of stucco, innovative at the time, blending geometric and floral motifs. Finally note the beautiful calligraphy. Don't miss a walk in the basement, lit by the translucent stones that span the entire courtyard of the mosque.
