The city has always sheltered a strong Armenian community, converted to Christianity from the fourth century and regrouped in Baron Avak's quarter. Tabriz has six churches. In the th century Marco Polo will mention one of them in his account of travel. See, in particular, the most interesting, Sainte-Marie (Kelesa-ye Maryam-e Moghaddas), reconstituted in 1785 and drawn at the angle of Sharati and Jomhuri avenues.
