FUNERARY TOWER (MIL-E GONBAD)

This remarkable mausoleum was erected in 1006 by a certain Ghabus (Member) ibn-e Vashmgir, prince of the local Dynastie dynasty. Famous scholar, patron and general of army, Ghabus reigned on the region at the end of the th century. The monument, planned to last forever, will be finished shortly before Ghabus is murdered… and buried inside. Set on an artificial mound top of 20 m and measuring it alone 55 m, it is the most spectacular tower in Iran. Dominating the surrounding plain, its extreme austerity and remarkable state of conservation remain impressive. The artistic origin of this type of monument, without being clearly established, would take its source in the mazdéenne religion. The solid tower foundations, entirely built in brick, are sinking over 10 m underground. Circular inside and décagonale outside, the structure is supported by so many foothills rising from base to conical roof. Two calligraphy, one metre above the door, the other under the roof are the only decorations of the tower. Originally, the glass casket of Ghabus was suspended under the dome of the tower. Despite the impossibility of access to the upper part, the casket has been missing for a long time.
