ALTSTADT - OLD TOWN
Historic medieval town with museum, market, hotel, statue, church, half-timbered house...
What used to be the heart of the medieval town has well preserved its historical character. Coming from the Neustadt, on the left side of Ritterstraße, you will see the Frey Haus, a beautiful baroque house with the town museum. The Markt (market) is only a stone's throw away. In its centre is one of Brandenburg's most important monuments: the Altstädtisches Rathaus, a magnificent red brick town hall. This former town hall dates from the years 1470-1480 and its tower was added in 1826. The famous Roland of Brandenburg dates from at least the 15th century (a Roland is in medieval Germany a knight's statue symbolizing the rights and privileges of cities). It stood in front of the Neustadt town hall and was installed here in 1946 after the destruction of the town hall. A little further to the north-east, opposite the Dominsel, stands the Church of St Gotthard, the oldest part of which is Romanesque (the tower dates from 1166). The main structure of the church is in late Gothic (mid 15th century). The highlight of the church is the late Gothic "triumphant cross group" (1463), which depicts Jesus on the cross with the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene. Between St. Gotthard Church and the former town hall is a half-timbered house on Rathenower Straße, which is probably the oldest schoolhouse in the town (1552). This historic centre of Brandenburg is largely paved, making it pleasant to walk around and you will discover here and there further medieval remains such as the towers of the former fortifications.
