SAINT-MARTIN DE MONDAYE ABBEY
Charming abbey with remarkable chapels, organs and a guesthouse, which hosts various spiritual and cultural activities.
Founded in 1215, Saint-Martin de Mondaye Abbey was rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries, notably by Prior Eustache Restout (1655-1743). He not only drew the plans, but also decorated the abbey. Consisting of a farmhouse, conventual buildings and an abbey church, the ensemble offers an architecture of particularly harmonious and regular proportions. Inside, which is currently undergoing major work (until 2024), the high altar, the choir of the chapel of the Virgin and the Pazzot organs are remarkable. The abbey buildings, consisting of a refectory, a sacristy and a library with 50,000 books, are open to visitors.
Today, Mondaye Abbey is still home to a community of canons of the Premonstratensian order. Spiritual and cultural activities are very much present: prayers, retreats, conferences, sessions for families, couples, teenagers and musical events. Good to know: it is possible to stay in the abbey, in the calm and silence, for a time of retreat or revision. The abbey's guest house has 24 rooms and a magnificent garden conducive to serenity. Don't leave without a detour to the pretty shop. And as the canon says, "The welcome is not given by women in short skirts but by men in long robes! That's all there is to it, because the smile is enriched with a beautiful humour and a heart as big as that!
