KLOSTER CHORIN - CHORIN ABBEY
A museum in Chorin that traces the life and building techniques of the Cistercians and organizes music festivals.
This is the jewel of Brandenburg's red brick Cistercian architecture, the excursion to take to a majestic abbey lost in the middle of lakes and forests. The monastery complex is in disuse and partly in ruins, which makes the atmosphere in its beautiful surroundings all the more romantic. The monastery is situated in the middle of a nature reserve on the Amtssee, where you can go for a good walk. It has been converted into a museum, where the life and building techniques of the Cistercians are meticulously documented. Construction began in 1273. At the end of the Middle Ages it was one of the most powerful Cistercian abbeys in Germany. After the conversion of the Elector of Brandenburg - Joachim II - to Protestantism in 1539, it was secularized three years later. During the Thirty Years' War it was repeatedly looted and burnt down. It was only in the 19th century, under the leadership of the famous Berlin architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, that the first conservation measures were taken. The main church is slender, spacious and finely decorated on the outside. During the visit (almost all parts of the monuments, even the attics, can be accessed), one can learn about the brick making techniques used by the monks, in kilns located in the basement, directly under the buildings. In the summer, the Chorin Music Festival is now held here, with excellent concerts.
