WISMAR MARKET SQUARE
A large market square now featuring a permanent exhibition tracing the history of the building and the city in general.
The market square is the largest in Northern Germany. The past splendor of the town's merchants and their opulent mansions is clearly visible. Of particular note is theAlter Schwede (Old Swede), a red-brick Gothic mansion and the oldest house in Wismar. Another impressive building is the classical-style Rathaus, dating from 1817. Last but not least, the Renaissance Wasserkunst pavilion, which supplied the town with water until the end of the 19th century.
