KREUZKIRCHE - CHURCH OF THE HOLY CROSS
A contradictory-looking evangelical church with a tower offering spectacular views of Dresden and the surrounding area.
A Baroque jewel box housing a strangely unadorned church: the Kreuzkirche, Dresden's most important evangelical church, astonishes with its contradictory allure. Dresden's oldest church was a chapel in 1206. In 1234, Margrave Heinrich donated a wooden fragment of the Holy Cross to the church, which became the Church of the Holy Cross(Kreuzkirche) in 1388. Its Baroque transformation, between 1764 and 1792, is still visible in its outer walls; the tower, from which the view over Dresden is spectacular and even extends to the vineyards of Radebeul when the weather is fine, dates from 1788. In 1945, the interior of the building burned to the ground during the bombing of the city. Only the walls remained. The church was quickly restored with grey rendering and basic furnishings, then re-inaugurated in 1955. Today's visitors, accustomed to the rebuilt Baroque splendors of the Altstadt, are surprised by this poor, hasty renovation. But it has the merit of reminding us of the horrors of war, and thus serves an important duty of remembrance. Since the 14thcentury , the Kreuzkirche has employed a world-renowned boys' choir, the Kreuzchor, to accompany mass. A concert of church music in this striking church is a unique Dresden experience.
