SCHINKELWACHE - OLD TOWN GUARD
On the square of the Theatre is a monument with unusual classical style in this baroque quarter. It is the "Guard of the Old Town" (Altstädtische Wache), also named Schinkelwache, because it was executed according to the plans of Karl Friedrich Schinkel, the famous architect Berlin, between 1830 and 1832. Built in stone sandstone, in the Saxons ore mountains, it has the characteristic and dark colour of the historic monuments of Dresden and its architecture is inspired by that of an ancient Greek temple - its portico has six ionic columns. In order to respect the baroque ensemble of the Theatre square, the architect kept some measure in the proportions of the building. It is much more modest than the Neue Wache in Berlin, erected between 1816 and 1818 by Schinkel on Unter den Linden Avenue. Today you can buy tickets for the Dresden in part of the Schinkelwache or enjoy a coffee and enjoy a homemade cake at Café Schinkelwache.
